Health & Wellness

Being healthy and well-nourished is a basic pre-requisite to learning and quality of life. Christel House provides a solid foundation for nutrition by serving two healthy meals and two snacks daily. For some learners, this will be their only nourishment. Each child also receives medical and dental checkups, hearing and vision screenings, immunizations in accordance with World Health Organization standards and additional medical treatments as required. To help children who have experienced traumatic events – violence, abandonment, bereavement and abuse – children receive counseling and group therapy.

Food and Nutrition

Christel House learners come from highly vulnerable communities, where monthly family income is highly unstable. To ensure that learners are able to concentrate and participate in the classroom, every day the children are fed breakfast, lunch and a snack before departure. In addition to well-balanced meals, Christel House South Africa provides vitamins, iron capsules and calcium supplements.

Physical Fitness

Along with general nutrition, we know that regular physical activity is vital for the growth and development of children. Physical Education classes are a required part of the curriculum.

In addition to taking part in required physical education classes, learners participate in an after-school Sports and Arts/Culture Programme every day from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. The community environments to which our children return after school are conducive to at-risk behaviors—drug use, gang activity and violence.

The Sports and Arts/ Culture Programme offers: Netball, Soccer, Karate, Fencing, Golf, Table Tennis, Volley Ball, Athletics, Cricket, Dance (Ballet, Modern, Traditional & Hip-Hop)Magic, Media, Choir , Band, , Knitting, Sewing, Drama, Creative Writing and Gardening. These activities are very popular and children are enthusiastic about the programme, through which Christel House gives children a safe place and constructive activities to improve their chances of avoiding drugs and crime.
